Preface
The Center for Media Studies and Research (CMSR) was established in 1989 under supervision of
the Deputy Office in Press and Publicity Affairs of Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance. On
the basis of general policies of the government and in order to further coordinate the activities of
the relevant instructional and research institutions the Center for Promotion of Media Training
was merged into the Center for Media Studies and
Research.
Established for research promotion and development of training mass communications fields,
among the others press and journalism, CMSR has so far been a relatively appropriate support
for the country's press.
Objectives
CMSR has so far strived for supporting theoretical and applied research, promotion of training in
media with an emphasis on the press, publishing the relevant informative resource books on
press and publicity domains, helping development and promotion of press activities and
contributing to press and publicity policies. To achieve the objectives mentioned CMSR has set up
the following departments:
A-Research Deputy
Taking advantage of mass communication and social sciences specialists, the Research Deputy of
CMSR plans, supervises and supports research works on mass communication fields especially
those on press and publicity as well as covering and supporting MA and Ph.D. dissertations on
the communications and its relevant fields.
The research works carried out by CMSR are categorized in three items: researches,
dissertations and expertise reports. The following table shows the number of such research
works, conducted by CMSR ever since its establishment.

Department for Reviewing Farsi-language Press
Published Abroad
The department was established in 1992 to collect, keep, conduct research and communicate
information on Farsi-language periodicals being published abroad. To this end the followings
were undertaken.
I- Setting up library and specialized archives having a collection of more than 500 titles of
books and 470 title periodicals published abroad. The
library and archives are ready to render services to researchers and
research centers.
II- Establishing a software-aided data bank that gives information on articles index and
Periodicals content.
III- The research unit, which publishes bulletin and research booklets on the field.
B- Training Deputy
The training deputy of CMSR is in charge of holding different journalism training courses in two
semesters every year including journalism, press graphics, specialized courses in Tehran as well
as short-term journalism principals courses for students in other Iranian cities
C- Specialized Library
The specialized library of CMSR is one of the richest libraries throughout the country in the field
of mass communications having more than 1800 Farsi-language and 1000 Latin books on the
subject. In addition the library has tens of specialized journals and periodical (both in Farsi and
English), documents, articles, dissertations and expertise reports on communication and press. A
precious collection of the research works and reports
conducted and prepared by CMSR and not published so far are exclusively kept for reference
cases.
IV- Rasaneh Journal
Published by CMSR Rasaneh, a quarterly journal on media studies and research, joined Iranian
press family in 1990.
In a nearly ten-year period Rasaneh, as the very first and the most significant journal on mass
communication, has published Iran's and that of the world's researches, reports, articles
and the modern scientific findings on mass communication, journalism and press. The journal has
been appreciated widely by university professors, experts and students of mass communication.
Training, international communications, Iranian and the world press, radio, television, cinema,
public relations, public opinion, history, sociology, law, satellites, modern technology, linguistics,
trade unions etc are the main topics discussed about in Rasaneh.
V- Publications Department
CMSR's publications department publishes topics on research reports, books and translations
about mass communication and its fields related once
they are approved by publication council.
The department has so far published more than 40 book titles and has some more than 10 titles
being under publication processes.
